Getting started

Do we need a waiver to fly at all?
Not for routine Part 107 flights within its limits. You need a waiver or COA for things Part 107 does not allow, such as BVLOS or some operations over people. [1]
Can a volunteer fire department use the 91.113 waiver?
FAA notes volunteer organizations are typically not public aircraft operators. Part 107 with the PSO shielded-ops waiver is the usual route. [2]
How long does a 91.113 PAO/PSO waiver last?
48 months. [3]
What if we need BVLOS in an emergency and have no waiver?
Use the FAA's Special Governmental Interest process. [4]

Can we buy a drone with a BJA grant?
Only with prior approval and only UAS on DCMA's Blue UAS list, with no modifications or added accessories. [7]
What about FEMA preparedness grants?
FEMA treats sUAS as aircraft that need prior approval and a detailed justification, including your SOP. [8]
Where is the official Blue UAS list?
On DCMA's Blue List portal. [9]
